The Batwa people were introduced to the area following their eviction from the forests of Bwindi, Echuya, and Mgahinga.

The Batwa people are indigenous inhabitants of Uganda, and their heritage is rich and worth exploring. Though they were evicted from their homes – forests, the Batwa still possess the last of their fading culture.

Their music dance and drama will definitely mesmerize whoever attempts to incorporate them in his/ her Uganda safari tour package or draw the same into the sorrowful imagination of how their tradition is steadily fading away.

The Bakiga are part of the Bantu group that has tilled the hills of Kigezi for centuries past. They are popularly known for their strength and unmatchable hard work when it comes to cultivation. They have rich traditions too which are worth exploring.

Their energetic dance is impressive while their ancient stories on how the pregnant girls would be dumped on the Punishment Island and left to die will open you to understanding their extreme wrath.

The post The People Communities & Culture Around Lake Bunyonyi appeared first on Lake Bunyonyi Uganda.

Birds Of Lake Bunyonyi

Samuel Makanga

Attractions

As it stands as the place of little birds, Lake Bunyonyi features...

The post Birds Of Lake Bunyonyi appeared first on Lake Bunyonyi Uganda.

As it stands as the place of little birds, Lake Bunyonyi features over 200 species of birds among which include weaver birds, grey crowned crane and herons. And if you visit Lake Bunyonyi on your Uganda tour you’ll undoubtedly hear the tale of Dr. Leonard Sharp, a British missionary that came to Uganda in the 1920s to spread Christianity.

After witnessing the huge impact of leprosy in the region, he established a voluntary isolation center- Leprosy Hospital – on Bwama Island, for people afflicted with Leprosy.

In the 1920s, leprosy was one of the deadly diseases in Uganda.

The disease was often surrounded by terrifying, negative stigmas and tales of leprosy patients being shunned as outcasts.

Kabale was one of the areas with a lot of leprosy sufferers. Today the disease has been eradicated, and the island is more of a tourist destination than anything else.

The post Bwama & Njuyeera (Sharp’s) Islands appeared first on Lake Bunyonyi Uganda.

Kyahugye Island Of Lake Bunyoynyi

Samuel Makanga

Attractions

Kahungye is the only island in Lake Bunyonyi where you can see...

The post Kyahugye Island Of Lake Bunyoynyi appeared first on Lake Bunyonyi Uganda.

Kahungye is the only island in Lake Bunyonyi where you can see wild animals of Uganda such as Zebras, Impala, Waterbucks, and Kobs.

Centuries ago before missionaries came to Uganda, there lived a man on this island. He diligently worshiped the ancestral spirits in a big shrine and appeased them by sacrificing a cow every year.

One year, the man ran out of cattle, and he failed to meet the demands of the spirits. They got angry and made him mad. During his state of insanity, visitors to this island always referred to it as the “Crazy Man’s Place”, hence the name Kahungye.

The post Kyahugye Island Of Lake Bunyoynyi appeared first on Lake Bunyonyi Uganda.

Akampene Island

Samuel Makanga

Attractions

Akampene, Also Called Punishment Island Akampene Island/Punishment Island is perhaps the most...

The post Akampene Island appeared first on Lake Bunyonyi Uganda.

Akampene, Also Called Punishment Island

Akampene Island/Punishment Island is perhaps the most interesting of the Lake Bunyonyi islands.

It is the place unmarried girls who became pregnant were brought by their fathers or brothers and punished by abandoning them on this island.

Here, they faced one of two possible fates. Any man who did not own sufficient cows to pay for an untainted bride was permitted to fetch the disgraced girl from the island and make her his wife. Failing that, the girl would usually starve to death or die while trying to swim ashore.

For a girl to become pregnant before marriage was shameful to the family.
