There are several Uganda safaris packages that offer you time to visit this lake like a 13-day Uganda gorilla & Rwanda trekking wildlife safari, 10 Days Uganda gorilla, chimps and wildlife safari, 12 Day cycling safari in Uganda Rwanda, and many more.

Lake Bunyonyi is the 2nd deepest lake in Africa after Tanganyika and one of the few lakes in the world said to be Bilharzia free. This lake is also dotted with Islands and the most common ones include the Akampene Island, which is mostly known as the punishment Island, Bushara Island, Kahungye Island, Bwama and Njuyeera (sharp’s Island), and Bucuranuka (upside down Island), which are the main islands. This magical lake is surrounded by beautiful, terraced hills terraced by the local Bakiga tribe living in this area offering beautiful scenery. This same lake is also home to many otters, the crayfish and its bird paradise to many species of birds and lies between Kisoro and kabale districts that are close to the border of Rwanda.

Lake Bunyonyi is one of the most stunning places within the country that provides a breath-taking atmosphere to the tourists or the visitors. Even though not well marketed as compared to many other tourist sites. Bunyonyi is also a known hide out that you would love to visit in order to have a life birding experience. The word “Bunyonyi” is in a local language meaning “birds” and the main reason as to why this lake was given this name is because it’s a home to a very wide range of bird species. There are many bird lovers that are loving this place because these many birds fly about the whole area and can easily be viewed. As compared to many other birding destinations within the country, Lake Bunyonyi is the most convenient place for the visitors since one gets to sit and relax on the lake shores as you view the bird species in the sky.

With the many Islands, it makes it even more convenient to stay around even for those that are homeless are fond of taking refuge on this lake and this has also increased the number of birds. All the Islands on this lake are easily accessed by a boat and some of the tourist’s love moving from one Island to another using a boat as they keep on searching for the different bird species. As part of their adventure, they get an opportunity of meeting some birds most especially the water birds as they play and move about the water surface like the white tailed blue Monard, the herons, the African Harrier Hawk, the egrets, slender-billed baglafetch, levillant cuckoo, levillant cuckoo, and the cardinal woodpecker, and many more.

Apart from seeing these birds, the tourists can also take part in some other activities including the spot fishing, boat rides, cultural walks, camping, the bamboo walks that are guided trails and these have been established and are so recommended for anyone who may be looking for a long stretch, nature walks and many more.

Importance Of The Wild Run

Today lake Bunyonyi is under threat due to encroachment by the people that live around it. There is increase in human activities around the lake, many people have engaged in farming and because they need land, they have dug terraces around the leading to mass wasting and soil erosion as well. Because of the increasing population, there increase in land use more so need to build more houses and other infrastructures, development of towns and many more. So Wild Run Uganda came up with conservation campaigns through runs to conserve these pristine safari destinations of Uganda.

These Wild Runs were officiated by the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities. These Wild Runs are done to create Tourism Awareness and Wildlife Conservation among the people in the community as well as the rest of the country. This has mutually continued to enhance conservation for generations.

About The Lake Bunyonyi Uganda Wild Run

The Lake Bunyonyi Wild Run of slated for 20th June 2019 will host Robert Rorich one of top South Africa Runners at home as the official runner. to run for Tourism Awareness.

There are a lot of South Africans that have been invited to visit Uganda for a Uganda safari as well as the run and the first team of South Africans is already in the Country for 25 Days of cycling from Busia to Kisoro. It lies between Kisoro and kabale districts which are close to the border of Rwanda. Lake Bunyonyi Uganda is beautifully dotted with over 29 Islands and the most common ones include the Akampene Island, which is mostly known as the punishment Island, Bwana, Kyahugye, Njuyeera, Bucuranuka, Bushara. All these Islands have got many bird species that can be enjoyed by the many bird watchers that visit the Lake.

The word “Bunyonyi” is in a local language meaning “birds” and the main reason as to why this lake was given this name is because it’s a home to a very wide range of bird species. Lake Bunyonyi takes its name from the abundant birdlife that call it home. Over 200 species are found here, including: Pied kingfisher, Malachite kingfisher, Cinnamon-chested Bee eater, Bronzy sun bird, Pied wagtail, grey shrike, Grey crowned crested crane, Hadada ibis, Swamp fly catcher, Black heron, Great cormorant, Fan-tailed widow bird, Streaky seed eater, Speckled mouse bird, Pin tailed whyder, bronze manikin, Black-headed weaver and Golden-backed weaver. Because it’s a bird’s haven, many travelers have enjoyed Uganda birding safaris on their Africa safari to this destination.

Apart from seeing these birds, the tourists can also take part in some other activities including the spot fishing, boat rides, cultural walks, camping, the bamboo walks that are guided trails and these have been established and are so recommended for anyone who may be looking for a long stretch, nature walks and many more. This lake can be visited throughout the year.

This same lake is also home to many otters, the crayfish. As compared to many other birding destinations within the country, Lake Bunyonyi is the most convenient place for the visitors since one gets to sit and relax on the lake shores as you view the bird species in the sky.

In this post we review the Black Heron

The Black Heron is a medium-sized of about 42.5–66 cm in height, black-plumaged heron with black bill, legs and yellow feet. In breeding plumage, it grows long plumes on the crown and nape.

The Black Heron prefers shallow open waters, such as the edges of freshwater lakes and ponds. It may also be found in marshes, river edges, rice fields, and seasonally flooded grasslands. In coastal areas, it may be found feeding along tidal rivers and creeks, in alkaline lakes, and tidal flats.

The bird has an interesting hunting method called canopy feeding. It uses its wings like an umbrella and uses the shade it creates to attract fish. This technique was well documented on episode 5 of the BBC’s The Life of Birds. Some have been observed feeding in solitary, while others feed in groups of up to 50 individuals, 200 being the highest number reported. The black heron feeds by day but especially prefers the time around sunset. The primary food of the black heron are small fish, but it will also eat aquatic insects, crustaceans and amphibians.

The nest of the Black Heron is constructed of twigs placed over water in trees, bushes, and reed beds, forming a solid structure. The heron nests at the beginning of the rainy season, in single or mixed-species colonies that may number in the hundreds. The eggs are dark blue, and the clutch is two to four eggs.

We can tailor for you a short Uganda wildlife safari to any of the National Parks in Uganda. Lake Bunyonyi has over 29 islands and these can all be reached by boat or dugout canoe. In the past, one of its islands was used for punishment.

In fact, of all the 29 islands in Lake Bunyonyi, Akampene Island also known as the Punishment Island is the most visited on by tourists on safaris to Uganda. The islands around it are far busier, with houses, tourist comfort resorts such as those that litter the entire lake and thriving trees.

Tales About Akampene Island

Akampene Island, found in the center of lake Bunyonyi, is large enough for the lonely tree that grows there. From the Bunyonyi overland resort pier, it takes a ride of about 20 minutes in a motorized boat running at a slow speed to get to the island. Some tourists on Uganda adventure safaris to Lake Bunyonyi, prefer paddling their way in locally dugout canoes.

In the old traditional Bakiga society, a young woman could only get pregnant after marriage. Marrying off a virgin daughter meant receiving a bride price, mostly paid with livestock. An unmarried pregnant girl was seen as not only bringing shame to the family but robbing it of much needed wealth. Families used to rid themselves of the “shame” by dumping pregnant girls on Akampene punishment Island, leaving them to die.

Most people at the time especially girls did not know how to swim. So, if a young woman was dumped on the island, she had two options; jump into the water and drown or wait to die from the cold and hunger.

Another way the girl would survive was that a passing canoeist would stop by the island and rescue the
girl there. This rescuer would take the girl as his own wife. Because dowry was expensive then, men and girls would find themselves in unlikely romance developing between the gratefully rescued girl and the gallant rescuer. This was regarded as “getting a free wife”, because the man would not have to pay any bride price for her. This was the most common event, and there are women still alive today who were rescued in this way, and they have happy families.

However, Akampene island itself is dying out because the lake is eroding it away from underneath, and this is what killed the trees that existed there. Their roots do not find soil anymore, so in the future, there may not be any Punishment Island anymore. But there will still be that the beautiful Lake Bunyonyi. Take a Uganda safari before it diminishes.

We can tailor for you a short Uganda wildlife safari to any of the National Parks in Uganda. Are you interested in tracking gorillas or chimpanzees? Towns on its shores include Kyevu and Muko, while its 29 islands include Punishment and Bushara.

The stunning looks of Lake Bunyonyi have made it one of the interesting destinations which are attracting different travelers to take safaris in Uganda. This lake is one of the top tourism revenue earners for Uganda which money is got from several Uganda safaris. and the main water source for Kabale town.

Lake Bunyonyi masks a dark and painful past that makes it a key tourist destination. In fact, of all the 29 islands that make up Lake Bunyonyi, the Punishment Island, “Akampene” is the most visited. The islands around it are far busier, with houses, tourist comfort resorts such as those that litter the entire lake and thriving trees. The history of this lake alone has attracted several Lake Bunyonyi safaris.

According to olden times, Lake Bunyonyi is said to have been formed late back about 8000 million years ago. In fact, of all the 29 islands in Lake Bunyonyi, Punishment Island is the most visited on by tourists on safaris to Uganda. The islands around it are far busier, with houses, tourist comfort resorts such as those that litter the entire lake and thriving trees.

An unmarried pregnant girl was seen as not only bringing shame to the family but robbing it of much-needed wealth.

The post Akampene Island’s Dark History Turned Lake Bunyonyi Into A Tourist Destination appeared first on Lake Bunyonyi Uganda.
